Rolando’s Disability Reflection

It was really difficult at first whether or not I wanted to take this class this semester due to the coronavirus, I thought about it numerous times. Should I take the class or should I wait until this pandemic is over? Will I honestly learn about anything online? I always thought speech class was about learning how to speak properly in front of people or maybe learn how to listen to others better. I never really thought about it being a crucial learning class, But luckily I was wrong.

These past weeks I've learned so much in so little time. I learned how to work as a team, how to build friendships quick and even about disabilities. Something I never really thought about in my life, I learned it in speech. My group and I have been working on a project, which in my opinion is one of the hardest topics I've ever done. The topic was about Hearing And Visual Disabilities. In my section of the group we were assigned with Visual, My classmates Alicia; Cynthia ,Eliana ,Scarleth worked hard on this project and each of us stayed up late working on it. One of the most challenging parts of the research was the interview. We were to look for someone to interview but couldn't find anyone, then after asking our Group 2 members we found someone who Yuni knew of by the name of Catalina. She was super nice and was willing to help us with the interview, we asked a series of five questions and she responded fast and deliberately.

Out of the five questions one stood out to me when she responded, The question we asked was "What would you advise someone who is newly blind?" She responded by saying "I know how you feel. You may feel like getting through life will be impossible but it’s not. There’s always a way. Through strength and hard work, you will get through any obstacle no matter the disability" After her response it really left me thinking that your not alone, even though I didn't know her or have ever seen her it left me thinking that no matter what disability you have, it shouldn't affect your potential and your limits in life, what I loved was her response, She was so genuine and dedicated to what she said.

After we were done with the project it was time to present, The first group presented flawlessly and there presentation was really good. This got me a little nervous because I thought I was gonna mess it up for my group, This was one of the reasons why I didn't like presenting because I would get so nervous and would stutter a lot. But now that we are doing this virtually it has helped me present better as in not stuttering and saying umm during every sentence. I really do appreciate my classmates and my group, I love the WhatsApp chat that my group and I are in, we always got each other's backs. The Professor Sherri has been an amazing help too, even though we are not there physically, she has been very helpful and accessible. During times like these, I could have not chosen a better class to ease this process.
