Alicia's Disability Reflection
For our second presentation, we had
to make a brochure, poster, and power point explaining all the different types
of disabilities and some disorders that there are. I can honestly say that I
never knew this much about all the disabilities that existed. This project
informed me so much and it really opened my eyes towards this subject. I
enjoyed researching about vision and hearing disabilities and learning how to
help people that go through this and try to understand them. Not a lot of
people are informed about the different disabilities that there are so in a way
I’m grateful I had the opportunity to teach my classmates and they also teach
me.
The first group that presented had
to teach us about mobility and physical impairments, spinal cord disabilities, and
head injuries-brain disabilities. One thing that really surprised me that they
mentioned was how most spinal cord disabilities occur because of car accidents.
I found that to be super scary because we all drive and it can happen to any of
us at any time. Overall I really enjoyed their presentation because they were
very detailed and informative about their subject. They asked very important
questions in their interview too.
The group I was in had to do
research on vision and hearing disabilities. For this, we all split up who was
going to do what and what they were going to explain in their part. So for this, we split up the group into two parts, the vision disability, and the hearing
disability. I was in the vision group and I chose to explain the different
organizations that there are and go over some facts that not everyone knows
about. One thing that I learned about vision disabilities is that just because
you have it does not mean your blind and about 80% of vision disabilities can
be corrected with the proper treatment. We all worked together and communicated
throughout this project, so everything was smooth sailing and it was fun to see
everything come together nicely.
The last group that presented spoke
about cognitive and learning disabilities, psychological disorders, and
invisible disabilities. Hidden disabilities was a new term that I did not know
of and mean that you can not tell that the person has this certain condition.
It usually relates to diabetes or epilepsy. This group also spoke clearly and I
enjoyed their power point.
I thought I knew about disabilities
but in reality, I was shown that I did not know much at all which is a bit
understandable because not a lot of people talk about disabilities. I think
every group did an awesome job and I genuinely believe that everyone learned at
least one thing that we did know before. Everyone’s poster came out really nice
and informative, so I hope other people can see them and learn a little more
about disabilities so that they can teach others too. I did not think my speech class was going to
be this entertaining and informative on other subjects, not just speech itself.

Great blog! The students in my class made this course so very interesting. I have learned klso much!
